The Comptroller General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, has pledged the full support of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, towards the realisation of Nigeria’s ambition to build a $1 trillion economy.

He stressed that the attainment of the target will depend largely on the ability of institutions to translate national aspirations into concrete, measurable outcomes.

Adeniyi made the commitment on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, while delivering a keynote address at the New Nigeria Festival, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Conference Hall, Abuja.

He expressed optimism that the $1 trillion economic target is achievable, provided the strategies and policy frameworks designed to attain it are matched with disciplined execution, institutional commitment and tangible results.

According to the CGC, the journey towards a stronger and more prosperous economy must move beyond policy pronouncements and intellectual discourse to deliberate and sustained action. He noted that the Customs Service had already begun translating the national economic agenda into practical interventions through its ongoing Modernisation Reforms.

He specifically cited the deployment of B’Odogwu, the Authorised Economic Operator ,AEO, programme and the Advance Ruling mechanism as key initiatives aimed at transforming the trading environment.

According to him, the reforms are designed to facilitate legitimate trade, enhance transparency and predictability, improve the ease of doing business and ultimately strengthen revenue mobilisation for national development.
“Execution is nothing if it is not concrete. We have to move from ideas to action and ensure that whatever we plan translates into results. That is how we can begin to see the kind of transformation we are talking about,” he said.

Adeniyi emphasised that the responsibility for building a $1 trillion economy can not be shouldered by government institutions alone. He stressed that the ambition required a collective sense of ownership and commitment from government agencies, the private sector, businesses and citizens, with each stakeholder playing a clearly defined role in converting national aspirations into measurable economic outcomes.

He further stressed the strategic role of Nigeria Customs Service in the country’s economic transformation, noting that its statutory responsibilities in revenue collection, trade facilitation and border management placed the Service at a critical intersection of national economic growth and development.

The CGC therefore, called for a decisive shift from rhetoric to implementation, urging institutions and citizens to embrace greater responsibility for the success of the national economic agenda.

He maintained that Nigeria’s $1 trillion ambition could become a reality when carefully designed plans are backed by effective execution, institutional accountability and sustained commitment to measurable results.
