You can call him a distinguished trailblazer in public service, a hero of public service, integrity, and institutional transformation. Certainly, the Heroes Award bestowed on CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD, is a recognition of his broader leadership legacy.

A Fitting Tribute :
In celebrating Adeniyi as a hero of public service, the Daily Times has, in effect, recognised a leader whose greatest achievement may not be any single policy, seizure, revenue milestone or technological innovation, but the changing of an institutional narrative and restoration of confidence in what the Nigeria Customs Service can become under enlightened, intelligent and principled leadership.

For a patriotic Nigerian whose leadership has touched revenue administration, trade facilitation, national security, digital transformation and international Customs diplomacy, the Daily Times Heroes Award is a fitting tribute to an exceptional achiever whose service continues to leave an indelible mark on Nigeria’s development landscape.

His name commands respect across Nigeria and abroad. His record continues to speak for him, and his reputation for integrity has become one of the defining features of his public career.

To maritime stakeholders, the prestigious Daily Times Heroes Award, is well-deserved recognition of an exceptional public servant whose remarkable stewardship has redefined the narrative of the Nigeria Customs Service and elevated its institutional standing both at home and within the international maritime community.

The much talked-about Award was bestowed on CGC Adeniyi on Thursday, 3 September 2026, at the THISDAY Dome in Abuja, as part of the centenary celebration of Daily Times newspaper. The epoch making event brought together eminent personalities from government, business, traditional institutions and other sectors of national life to celebrate individuals and organisations whose contributions have significantly shaped Nigeria’s development trajectory.

For CGC Adeniyi, however, the honour represents far more than a ceremonial accolade. It is a testament to a leadership philosophy anchored on integrity, intelligence, strategic foresight, institutional discipline, professionalism and commitment to national development.

His emergence as a recipient of Daily Times Heroes Award is, in many respects, a public affirmation of the transformative imprint he has made on the Nigeria Customs Service.
Adeniyi has distinguished himself as a leader whose achievements speak louder than rhetoric. Under his stewardship, the Service has increasingly become associated with innovation, digital transformation, trade facilitation, enhanced revenue mobilisation, anti-corruption initiatives and stronger stakeholder engagement. Through a combination of administrative dexterity, intellectual depth and purposeful leadership, he has demonstrated that revenue and border-management institution can simultaneously pursue efficiency, security, economic growth and service excellence.

His engagements with international customs and maritime institutions have projected the Nigeria Customs Service as a more progressive, technologically driven and professionally oriented organisation. His influence within the international customs community has further reinforced Nigeria’s voice and visibility in global trade and border-management conversations.

Presidential Accolade :
Even President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, has publicly acknowledged Adeniyi’s exceptional performance and described him as the best-performing Customs chief, an endorsement that underscores the remarkable confidence reposed in his leadership at the highest level of government.

The attributes that have endeared Adeniyi to officers, stakeholders, business communities and international partners are unmistakable. Integrity remains synonymous with his name; intelligence informs his decisions; humility tempers his authority; courage strengthens his convictions; while an uncommon commitment to duty drives his pursuit of results. He has consistently demonstrated that leadership is about creating measurable value, inspiring people and leaving institutions stronger than they were found.

Paradigm Shift :
One of the most outstanding aspects of his leadership is his ability to change perceptions. The Nigeria Customs Service that Nigerians increasingly encounter today is markedly different from the traditional image associated with the institution. Adeniyi has helped shift the narrative from one centred predominantly on enforcement and revenue collection to one that embraces trade facilitation, digitalisation, transparency, professionalism, innovation and partnership with legitimate businesses and other government agencies.

His intellectual capacity and strategic understanding have equally distinguished him. Adeniyi has shown an exceptional ability to connect the responsibilities of Customs administration with the larger imperatives of economic development. From modernising Customs processes to promoting trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area ,AfCFTA, his interventions reflect an understanding that Customs is not merely a border agency, but a critical instrument of economic policy and national prosperity.

Receiving the Award, Adeniyi described the recognition as an inspiration to do even more, while dedicating the honour to officers and men of the Service and acknowledging the contributions of compliant citizens.

“It’s very good when you do something, and you are recognised; this should be an inspiration to us to do much better,” Adeniyi said.

That response perhaps captures the essence of the man behind the office: a leader who regards recognition not as a destination, but as a renewed obligation to serve.
He also emphasised the collective efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service in advancing revenue generation, trade facilitation and the implementation of the AfCFTA agreement, while calling for greater public compliance to enable the Service to discharge its responsibilities more effectively.

The Times Heroes Award, therefore, resonates as more than another addition to an already impressive catalogue of honours. It is a recognition of a public servant whose tenure has been characterised by purposeful transformation, institutional renewal and enduring devotion to national service.

CGC Adewale Adeniyi has, in the estimation of many, become a symbol of what purposeful leadership can accomplish within a public institution.
