…As Ogun 1 Customs honours retiring officers, exceptional athletes
It was an evening suffused with warmth, conviviality and genuine appreciation at the Ogun 1 Customs Command, on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, when the Area Controller, DC Oladapo Afeni, paid tribute to retiring officers whose decades of dedicated service had contributed immeasurably to the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, and the nation at large.
In a gesture that portrayed his appreciation of sacrifice beyond the demands of official duty, DC Afeni organised a special dinner in honour of the outgoing officers, celebrating their years of commitment, discipline, resilience and service to their fatherland.

The special occasion provided a fitting platform to acknowledge men and women whose professional journeys had helped shape the institutional heritage of the Service.
But the celebration did not end with the retirees.
Recognising that excellence deserves equal recognition, the Area Controller also honoured athletes from the Command, who performed excellently at the recently concluded Inter-Command Games in Zone ‘A’.
Their outstanding performance was celebrated alongside the retirees, reinforcing the Command’s appreciation of both enduring service and contemporary excellence.
The initiative offered a revealing dimension to the personality of DC Afeni. Widely recognised for his uncompromising approach to anti-smuggling operations, where the demands of enforcement often require firmness, courage and unyielding resolve, Afeni demonstrated that strength in enforcement can coexist with empathy, appreciation and humanity. His kind gesture to the retirees
also shows that Afeni the tough enforcement officer, can also be Afeni the compassionate leader, who recognises sacrifice, loyalty and excellence, while making the meaning of his name a recurring but elegant motif.
Indeed, the occasion appeared to bring the deeper meaning of his name to life. Oladapo is associated with the coming together of honour and wealth, while Afeni evokes a person who loves and cares for others. In honouring officers who had given decades of their lives to the Service and celebrating athletes who had brought distinction to the Command, the Area Controller offered a practical expression of the values embedded in his name.
The gathering, which attracted representatives of sister government agencies from Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, traditional rulers and other distinguished guests, further reflected the goodwill generated by the Command under his leadership. Speakers and guests alike acknowledged the retirees for their steadfastness, professionalism and enduring contributions to the Service.
For many who see Afeni primarily through the lens of enforcement, the evening offered a different portrait of the Area Controller. The same officer who has earned a reputation for an aggressive and intelligence-driven approach to combating smuggling was seen in a remarkably relaxed and convivial mood, sharing moments of enthusiasm with his officers, exchanging pleasantries, offering words of commendation and bonding with members of the Command as one family.

It was a reminder that behind the resolute enforcement officer is a leader who understands that an organisation is built not only through operational achievements, but also through the recognition, motivation and welfare of the people who make those achievements possible.
Addressing the attendees, DC Afeni said the retiring officers had earned the honour through their years of commitment, diligence and assiduous service to the NCS. “Tonight is about honouring a lifetime of duty, leadership and integrity. You carried the weight of responsibility on your shoulders and guided younger officers of this organisation in every season.
“The high standards you set will continue to serve as a reference point for officers still in active service”, he enthused.

The Area Controller urged the retirees to embrace the next chapter of their lives with fulfilment, advising them to devote quality time to their families and enjoy the fruits of their long years of service.
The evening therefore transcended the conventional farewell to retiring officers. It became a celebration of institutional memory, sacrifice, excellence and humanity, initiative through which DC Afeni demonstrated that while the demands of his office may require him to be a formidable guardian of the nation’s economic frontiers, he remains equally capable of pausing to honour those whose loyalty and sacrifice have strengthened the Service.
Beyond the seizures, enforcement operations and anti-smuggling victories, the special dinner revealed another dimension of DC Oladapo Afeni: a leader who understands that those who give their best deserve to be recognised, those who serve deserve to be honoured, and those who excel deserve to be celebrated.
In that moment, Afeni did more than organise a dinner. He lived up to his name.
