…Renovates Ife Girls’ High School
…Memory lane on schools remodelled by Customs in few years
The intervention by the Comptroller General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, in rehabilitation and transformation of public schools is steadily rekindling hope among learners across Nigeria, demonstrating that meaningful leadership can transcend institutional mandates to touch lives and shape futures.

The commissioning of fully renovated Ife Girls High School, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Monday, 14 September 2026, under Customs Cares Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, is the latest expression of a philosophy that regards education infrastructure not merely as physical assets, but as a foundation upon which the future of communities and the nation is built.
At the heart of CGC Adeniyi’s intervention is a deliberate willingness to look beyond the traditional responsibilities of the Service in revenue generation, trade facilitation and border protection, and invest in a sector which dividends may not immediately appear on a balance sheet but endure across generations.
Addressing students of Ife Girls High School, the Customs helmsman reminded them that education remains a passport to a better life and urged them to remain focused despite prevailing challenges. His decision to further announce university scholarships for three outstanding students added colour to the occasion from commissioning of renovated infrastructure to a direct investment in human capital.
In effect, the CGC has thrown the proverbial ball into the court of the beneficiaries, challenging them to convert the opportunities created for them into academic excellence and positive contributions to society.
Within just three years of his stewardship, the breadth of these interventions has underscored the depth of CGC Adeniyi’s commitment to using the Customs Cares platform as an instrument of social impact.
Memory lane :

In analysing the impact of Customs intervention in the education sector, our Reporter went memory lane to tace Adeniyi’s tremendous contributions to the renovation of various schools in the country.
From commissioning of the Local Authority Primary School and Primary Healthcare Centre at Sagbokoji in Lagos, by April 2025, to the renovation of Christ Assembly Nursery and Primary School at Ajegunle in July 2025, the Service has continued to extend its social responsibility footprint to communities where critical infrastructure remains inadequate.

At Government Secondary School, Wuse Zone 3, in Abuja, a newly renovated multipurpose assembly hall and other infrastructure upgrades commissioned in March 2026 further demonstrated that the intervention encompasses more than classroom walls, embracing facilities capable of creating a more conducive environment for learning, recreation and collective school activities.

Building Futures In Coastal Community :
Perhaps more compelling is the reach of the initiative beyond conventional urban centres. The Sagbokoji intervention is particularly instructive, as the coastal community in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State was not left outside the circle of Customs’ social investment.

There, the Service remodelled a school that had stood for about two decades and simultaneously supported the local healthcare facility with solar lighting and refurbished equipment. Such interventions illustrate a leadership style that seeks to ensure that geographical remoteness does not become a barrier to access to basic educational and social infrastructure.
The significance of this approach lies not only in the structures delivered, but in the renewed sense of dignity, possibility and belonging they confer on communities that may otherwise feel overlooked.
Methodist Primary School, Ibeshe, Ikorodu, Lagos :
The story of Methodist Primary School, Ibeshe, Ikorodu, Lagos, provides another striking chapter in this emerging legacy. After more than a century of existence, the school benefited from Customs’ intervention and was commissioned in February 11, 2026, transforming a historic institution into a more befitting environment for a new generation of learners. That a school established in 1922 could, more than 104 years later, receive renewed attention under the Customs Cares initiative speaks to the enduring value of preserving educational institutions while preparing them for the demands of the future.

Similarly, the Ife Girls High School project reflects a comprehensive approach to educational renewal, addressing physical, administrative, sanitary, recreational and environmental needs. As Osun State Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, observed, the intervention recognises that students learn more effectively when their physical surroundings support their wellbeing.
Provision of Educational Materials : Beyond buildings and infrastructure, the Customs Cares initiative has also extended to the provision of notebooks, writing materials, school bags, shoes, rain jackets and umbrellas to thousands of pupils and students across beneficiary schools. Collectively, these interventions constitute a growing legacy of educational investment under CGC Adeniyi’s stewardship, demonstrating that the impact of leadership can be measured not only in revenue figures or institutional reforms, but also in the opportunities created for young Nigerians.
Beyond Visible Monuments :
By investing in schools, equipping learners and reaching communities across different geographical and socioeconomic settings, Customs under CGC Adeniyi is effectively investing in the architects of tomorrow.

The structures may stand as visible monuments to the intervention, but the greatest legacy will ultimately be found in the lives of the children who sit within those classrooms, learn under improved conditions and carry the benefits of those investments into their communities and the wider Nigerian society.
